Appel forgive me for mentioning them in the same breath : I haven't yet fully developed the taste for Rachmaninov that I shall one day have, and therefore I don't have sufficient authority, either as a professional or as a lover, to intelligently discern betwixt the magnificent and the technically correct. All this aside, Wodehouse is hilarious. He can't help but be hilarious. When he describes his ears as being large and "attached at right angles" and his overall appearance as tending toward the ailing piscine, I have a very justifiable reason to giggle at the image. When he describes the seventh of his nine holes of indoor golf, I lose a solid half-pound in burned calories and discover exactly what new colours appear after abstaining from air for forty seconds.

    Stop supporting them.

Exercise discernment. But what if fifty of them have been ravaging the people you sent them to? Of course, many churches are careful and discerning about which missionaries they support.

And pray that your sister churches would have the courage and conviction to send prosperity-preaching missionaries to the bench instead of the field. Your church is reformed. Missions exists because we want to see people eternally happy in the presence of God forever.

Let that be your guiding light.

Are the people you support working for that? Are they going to help people be eternally happy in Christ? If not, let me encourage you to gently and humbly refuse to support them.

Remember, your faithfulness to the Great Commission will not be measured by dollars spent, Bibles given, or hands raised at an altar call. The measure of faithfulness will be an eternal one.

Do You Know What Your Missionaries Actually Teach?!

They decide to compete in a cricket match in a field full of cows to determine who should step back to let the other propose to the lady. Quite a number of entertaining and funny moments occur in all of these tales.

He had the knack to create memorable tales with a minimum of words and space, making his short stories, novellas and articles every much as praiseworthy as his novels.

These works take the reader from bespectacled heroes to indoor golf and make the absurd seem almost normal. The field of ecclesiology is also enriched by the book's discussion of authority as at once necessary and fallible. Those interested in the work of Michael Polanyi, Yves Simon, or Oliver O'Donovan will find these authors brought into the broader conversation about authority in an engaging way.

Victor Austin writes against this antinomian sensibility. His clear, accessible and convincing analysis shows how moral, political, and religious authority brings order to society and beauty to the soul.

    Up with Authority

We need not accept all of his premises to benefit from this wide-ranging essay, fortunately so, since the author at times plays the smiling contrarian who invites us all to revisit our assumptions. For readers who have taken social order as rooted in either persuasion or compulsion, and so assumed that authority is derivative, transient, postlapsarian, the dead hand of the past, or the polite mask of force, this book offers a clear-headed alternative.

Austin explores the ineliminable centrality of fallible authority in our social, epistemic, political, and ecclesial communal lives, and discerns structures of authority in the Trinity and the paradisal life of friends living together. In part Christian theology, in part humane anthropology, in part philosophical reflection, this is altogether a galvanizing book.
